When JPG is the right choice
Use JPG for photographs, scanned documents and any image with smooth gradients. Avoid it for logos, screenshots with crisp text, or anything needing transparency — JPG has no alpha channel and will place a white background behind transparent areas.
Understanding JPG quality numbers
Quality is a perceptual dial, not a percentage of detail retained.
- 90–95%: near-original, large files, for printing or editing
- 75–85%: the web standard, no visible artefacts
- 50–70%: small files, faint softening in fine texture
- Below 50%: visible blocking around edges
