Compress PNG Files Online

PNG is a lossless format: it never discards image data, so the savings are more modest than JPG or WebP. This page defaults to PNG output and lets you switch to WebP or JPG in one click when you need a far smaller file.

If you set a very small target size, the tool will tell you honestly when lossless PNG cannot get there and offer dimension scaling or a format change.

Why PNG files stay large

PNG uses DEFLATE compression on exact pixel data. For flat graphics with few colours that is extremely efficient. For a photograph with millions of subtly different pixels there is very little repetition to exploit, so the file stays big.

PNG alternatives that keep transparency

You do not have to give up the alpha channel to get a small file.

  • WebP supports transparency and is typically 25–50% smaller than PNG
  • Keep PNG for icons, diagrams, screenshots with text and pixel art
  • Convert photographs to JPG or WebP — the difference is dramatic
